There’s something I noticed about manga in the medical genre, which is that they all have a “genius” doctor as the main character set in a hostile political environment with corrupt hospital directors. This leads me to think about the actual state of the health care system in Japan, although the one we have here in the United States could be improved upon as well.

Saijou no Meii fits the stereotypical medical manga like a glove. Other series I’ve read that fall into this category were Say Hello to Black Jack and GodHand Teru. Even though they might share some general themes, each one is different enough to hold my interest.

Started reading this manga on a whim today. I was somewhat hesitant to read it at first due to the drawing style, but now I’m glad I did.

Summary from One Manga:

Teru Mahigashi is a surgeon just out of medical school. Saving lives and helping people is the point of his chosen profession, and he seems pretty good at it, when he’s not screwing up. People wonder why he has decided to become a doctor, when he is so clumsy, until his past starts reveal, and his ability to save lives becomes apparent with each operation… Gradually, Teru and all of his colleagues will make a huge change in the medical world.

The manga has the commonly used theme of a main character that is granted with extraordinary abilities/power. It’s enjoyable to see him saving lives with his abilities as a surgeon, and the medical jargon is quite interesting as well. However, I’m too lazy to pursue further research on the subject or to confirm its accuracy.

Even though some readers might find it a bit episodic (he saves a patient’s life every chapter), it all serves to forward the plot towards the hospital director’s plan: Project Valhalla.

On an unrelated note, that’s a pretty cool name for a project. Hm, I might use it in the future.
