Kamisama no Memo-chou – First Impressions

Kamisama no Memo-chou was one of the series I was most looking forward to this season and it doesn’t disappoint.

The story is about a high school boy who gets involved with a NEET detective girl named Alice and also meets her circle of friends. He ends up becoming her assistant and helps to tackle any new cases they get.

This series feels almost like Gosick in a modern setting since Alice is similar to Victorique in many ways including their proficiency in solving mysteries. However, Alice relies on her network of computers to feed her the necessary information while also using her assistant/friends to do outside tasks since she usually stays in her room. The first case was a good warm-up and leaves me highly anticipating the future cases they will be called on to solve.

Oh, Alice also keeps a refrigerator stocked with only cans of what looks like Dr. Pepper. I wonder how many people felt a craving and went to go drink some after watching an episode.

Rating: Very Good

What did you think of the quality of the mystery, just this first episode?

The first episode was actually the length of two normal episodes put together, which was nice since it showed a complete case from the beginning to the end.

As for the quality of the mystery, I thought it was decent even though the subject matter is overused. The conclusion of the mystery wasn’t exactly how I guessed it would be, so at least it wasn’t blatantly obvious.

This one might look better if you were more familiar with the series I guess. I just kinda walked in and watched the first couple episodes and it didn’t really seem to do it for me. I liked Gosick but this one just felt a bit random. Like someone thought “Hey, let’s make a story and throw NEET around like a buzzword. We’ll have a goth loli who says she speaks for the dead or somesuch thing.” Maybe the explanations are forthcoming but it didn’t quite catch my interest enough to wait for them.

The first couple episodes did feel somewhat random (some people mentioned it felt like Durarara!!), but I guess I got used to it. I actually fell behind on Gosick a while back, so this series fulfilled my urge for mystery.
