Yumekui Merry – First Impressions

The Winter 2010 Season has arrived at last with a multitude of new series to watch!

Yumekui Merry is about a high school student who has the ability to see the “color” of other people’s dreams. He encounters Merry who is originally from the “Dream World” and is later attacked by a Nightmare attempting to take over his body in order to enter the “Real World”.

The premise is quite interesting since dreams are a fascinating topic by itself. The way the first episode was presented actually made the series more intriguing than I expected it to be and hopefully it stays that way to the end. My only worry is that it’ll end up being an almost episodic nightmare-battling show, but now I doubt that will happen.

The animation is pretty good with the battle between Merry and the Nightmare being the highlight. I also love the foggy effects used to differentiate between the dream world and when it intersects with reality.

This should be a solid series to look forward to this season.

Rating: Very Good

Dreams can be such a rich theme. Crossing over and blurring the lines of dream world and reality are pretty trippy stuff. The premise looks really interesting, and the character designs nice. Should be a fun series.
