Star Driver – First Impressions

The Fall 2010 anime season is in full blast with a multitude of new series to post about! The one on tonight’s agenda is Star Driver.

After viewing an action-packed trailer and reading about the composer behind its music on Anime Instrumentality, I had high hopes for the series even though it was centered around mecha. As an added incentive, Miyano Mamoru (Kida from Durarara!! and Setsuna from Gundam 00) is voicing the main character.

I was a bit disappointed after watching the first episode. The story takes place on a stereotypical island where an academy is located. However, underneath the island lies complex facilities that houses some type of mecha. The plot moves quickly from your usual high school drama opening to a secret organization that wears “glittering masks”. Then it moves to students being kidnapped by said group and an epic battle ensues in another dimension where “Galactic Pretty Boy” comes to the rescue. Quite an interesting name for a hero to say the least.

I’m left confused by the seemingly random plot progression, but at least the battle was awesome and I had a few good laughs. Hopefully, the remaining episodes assist in constructing a more logical picture of what’s going on.

Rating: Decent

  1. This series looks to just blow stuff up out of proportion in that manner that’s really fun to watch. The first episode was more or less the standard let’s get to know the characters a bit while the second half of that was more oriented towards ridiculousness, but of an enjoyable sort. It’s not a great show by any stretch, but I’ll be looking forwards to the insanity that it serves up. It’ll be entertaining at least.

    The entertainment aspect is its strong point. Just like you, I can’t wait to see the insanity grow to epic proportions.

    It being centered around mecha means I’m probably staying away from this. 🙁

    That’s a valid reason, but if you ever need an over-the-top mecha series, Star Driver is exactly that. 🙂

    At first, I heard that this was about mecha and was going to not watch it but it looked interesting enough that I gave it a chance. It’s a good thing that I watched this and didn’t skip it. I’m really loving this series. It’s fun to watch– especially when he transforms. I can’t help but crack up in– a good way.

    His flashy magical girl transformation and the way he acts adds to the fun. ^^

    I have to say this isn’t as good as Bakuman or Ore no Imuoto, but it holds it’s own ^^;; mainly because of the over-the-top arua it has ^^;;

    Yup, for me I just prefer more serious/realistic series.
