If you are watching Durarara!!, then you have probably seen the Dollars BBS that Mikado and other members post on.
Like many others before me, I became interested in actually recreating the site.
The first task was to make the login page. A friend from UCLA (mm) looked at snapshots from the anime and created the logo from scratch. Thanks, mm!
Then looking at this and other snapshots, I recreated the login page to stay as true to the anime as possible.
As for the BBS itself, I decided to use the Kareha script and modified it to suit my needs.
There wasn’t really any good close-ups of the board itself until the more recent episodes.
I haven’t really worked on the site until this week. The login page was up, but it didn’t lead to anywhere (I blame school projects and other work).
The goal here is to make the discussion board look as close to the anime one as possible.
There is no user registration and anonymous posting is allowed just like 2chan and 4chan. Personally, it’s much more likely that I’ll post if I can do it right away without having to register and put in an email.
Of course, the functionality and features isn’t the same as what they have in the anime.
This is still a work in progress and there’s always room for improvement (it’s still missing some things!). I’ll be modifying/updating the BBS at random times.
Feel free to leave suggestions here or on the board itself.
The URL for Dollars BBS is [http://dollars-bbs.org/]. Probably everyone knows by now, but the password is “baccano” (same as in the anime).

Thanks, although the design is from the anime, the actual logo/image file used on the site was made by a friend of mine and was intended for use on the site itself. I don’t believe it is copyrighted though.

Hey, Durarara has quickly become my favorite anime, and I nearly had a heart attack when I found your website. It was instantly made my homepage. There’s just one issue I’m having with it. Every time I type in “baccano,” it tells me the password is incorrect. Is this just because there’s nothing beyond that point still, or there something I’m doing wrong? Any and all help is appreciated.

I would just google around for a tutorial on making a password protected website. As for the chat, it was simply using the code from http://code.google.com/p/drrr-like-chat/ and hosting it on a server. The instructions are pretty straightforward for setting it up, assuming you have your own web server.

I respectfully disagree. I don’t believe a blog post is “exposing” the Dollars too much. People spreading the word via forums, Twitter, Facebook, and blogs is still a form of “from people to people”, and helps to build the community.

Actually, i came here too to say that posting the password for a website, on a website thats 3 results down on google, is now no longer needed. You’ve got 90k people on the site, so why not just let pure word of mouth spread it now? I only found out about the bbs because a google searched it, and i found the password because i used google. Just so happened i found it right as i was watching the episode that revealed it, too. Why not just edit the password out.

Eh, I don’t think it’s that big of a deal. It’s just saving people from doing an extra Google search, or from reading the comments on this post too. The password is already out all over the place.
