Preview of Winter 2009 Anime Season
This is the series I’m most looking forward to next season. It’s supposed to be a “distorted love story” based on a light novel series by Ryohgo Narita. He also wrote Baccano!, which was adapted into an anime and was highly enjoyable for me.
I have seen the previous seasons of Nodame Cantabile, thus I’m anticipating the finale. An added interest is that I have played the piano for over 10 years, so it’s always interesting to see fellow piano players in stories.
Seems like a mystery anime based on a PSP visual novel. The mountain village setting and repeating nightmares aspect has me thinking of Higurashi no Naku Koro ni.
I’m always up for some good mystery though.
There’s always at least one harem anime every season. This one involves a cat-spirit demon huntress that protects the male lead who so happens to be allergic to cats.
Just great.
The premise is interesting enough to merit watching. The Shogunate strategist wants the last practitioner from the No Sword School to help her recover the legendary swords. She gives him a reason to help by stating that he will fall in love with her.
Hmm, a 15-year old girl enlists in the army and joins a unit of five girls that protect a fortress overlooking a small village. They also play music. The small military detachment of girls reminds me of Sky Girls, but this seems to be more on the serious side – hopefully.
Vampires and blood. Looks like there are tons of action scenes – should be fun to watch.

I was disappointed at the upcoming anime season after a quick glance at what was airing, but upon closer inspection I found several series to look forward to.
Some of the series I did not include in this preview were your typical fanservice fare.

Midseason Impressions – Winter 2009
I found that most of the shows coming this Winter are a much welcome change from the lackluster Fall season. In addition to the ones you’ve listed, I’ll definitely be checking out the final installment of Hidamari Sketch which is a series that I love to bits because of its excellent pacing.

That’s a rather exciting lineup. Not all that typical for the Winter season, either.
Durarara!!: I didn’t realize it was from the same writer as Baccano!, but I guess the exclamation marks should’ve tipped me off. The show is being directed by the same guy from Baccano! as well, who also directed another one of Ryohgo Narita’s works called Koi Kaze (all great titles). I guess they got some sort of connection going, and so far it’s been a fantastic match.
The art direction in Katanagatari really caught my eye, too. It’s sure to be a visual treat, but I’m hoping there’ll at least be something in the story or characters to hook me as well. Here’s a short commercial clip: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=JBhOyWWE3MQ
