Taishou Yakyuu Musume

After thinking about the Summer Season 2009 anime I’ve seen, I realized that I forgot to post about Taishou Yakyuu Musume.

Short summary from AniDB:

Anime adaptation of a light novel series (author Kagurazaka Atsushi & illustrator Koike Sadaji) surprisingly featuring the antics of a group of baseball playing schoolgirls in the Taisho period (1912-1926).

So it’s basically an anime about a bunch of newbie girls playing baseball. I know it might sound boring, but I found it to be quite compelling and humorous at times.

Some fun screencaps:

The art seems to have the effect of a watercolor painting – which suits the setting of the story perfectly. It seems like most anime adapted from light novels turn out well. I’m guessing one reason is because they have a lot of story material to work with.

Taishou Yakyuu Musume is a short series with a total of only 12 episodes, which is ideal for those with time constraints. Unfortunately, it seems like the fansub groups following it have fallen behind. =/

For anyone that has only seen the first episode: Don’t worry, this anime is not a musical.

  1. I actually liked the musical aspect in the first five minutes of the first episode since that brings with it infinite rewatch value (for me anyhow). As for the rest of the show, it’s as charming as charming can be. One can’t help but admire the characters for trying to break past the societal molds as they make a name for themselves doing what they want.

Taishou Yakyuu Musume is probably the big surprise of the season; it might not be the best show out, but it’s definitely a whole lot better then one might expect.

@Shiddo: Precisely so! It is easygoing at times and quit funny. Each character has her own specific qualities as well which makes their interactions so amusing/interesting.
